Extremely rare and well preserved early Rolex daytona cosmograph
very rare Rolex daytona cosmograph. This is one of the earliest Rolex daytona watches ref 6239 when the word ‘Daytona’ wasn’t applied on the dial yet. This watch comes directly after the double swiss and swiss signed generation Daytona’s. With it’s 1.09xxx serial it could be considered as one of the very first black dial Daytona watches with 2 line tekst on the dial.
The 2 lines on the black dial with silver ‘big eyes’ subdials dial are worth mentioning as both lines are written in a different font and color. The Rolex signature is white while the Cosmograph writing is applied in silver. There are just few examples known with a -t swiss t- dial and 2 line tekst, all examples fall in the 1 million serial range.
We bought this watch from the son of the original owner who bought the watch at the dutch retailer and Rolex dealer ‘Hans Heetman’ in Rotterdam in 1964. It has been given to his oldest son 11 years later in 1975. This daytona watch has been fully serviced and overhauled at the official Rolex service centre in 2004, it has been barely worn since and the condition of movement, case and dial is very good. The original tritium dots on the dial have been applied with lumious material at Rolex service in 2004.
