Valjoux 13 chronograph from the 1930’s in steel. Very rare find as most watches from this era have been made from chromed messing and other materials. Only high end brands as Patek, Vacheron, Audermas, Etc. used steel cases for their chronograph watches. The case measurers 37.2mm which is an impressive size for the time.
The watch is signed GJ on the dial. The brand is unknown to the collectors market as it has been a small watch supplier who only produced a very small amount of high-end watches. The quality of this chronograph is outstanding, a steel chronograph with column wheel movement was only used for the best chronograph watches during the 1930’s.
The three-body case is made of steel, has a ‘coin edge’ bezel and is signed ‘staybrite’ inside the caseback. With its 37.2mm case size its an impressive chronograph very similar to Patek Philippe, Vacheron and Longines chronograph watches from the same era. Inside is the Valjoux 13 chronograph movement with a single button adjustment.
The dial is a so called ‘snail dial’ with telemetry index. The dial shows some signs of wearing but seeing the age and unrestored condition it’s a beauty. The steel blue hands are untouched and beautiful as well. The colour combination between the red index, blue hands and brass coloured inner circle makes it a very attractive chronograph. Most of these watches have been used in military, this piece has a name signed on the back which probably refers to the officer it has been given to during the war.
The valjoux 13 caliber is a very early valjoux movement with a column wheel. These movement where used by famous brands as Audemars Piguet (valjoux 13” VZ) and its also the base caliber for the Patek Philippe 1518 as well as other models as the ref 130, ref 1463 and 1579 rattrapantes. The watch is a Monopusher chronograph, only one button is used to start, stop and reset the chrono.
