Rare Rolex ‘Datejust’ from 1954
This is one of the first Rolex datejust watches. The reference 6305 is one of the earliest datejust watches with the nickname ‘Ovettone’ due to its case from. Because it has an old style movement the case of the 6305 is slightly thicker then later models and has the nickname ‘Ovettone’ which means something like big egg in Italian. This example has a beautiful ‘engine turned’ bezel and I decided to supply the watch with a crystal without ‘cyclops’ as this looks much more elegant.
Tritium dial
The dial on this Rolex datejust is well preserved, this tritium dial is probably changed by Rolex in the era where Radium material was not allowed for the watch industrie (since 1963) anymore. Watches produced in the 1950’s contained a lot of hazardous radio-active material for the applying of luminous on dial and hands. Normally I’m not a big fan of service dials but in this case the dial is one of the things what attracts me most about this 6305-1 Rolex watch. It has unusual gold markers and hour / minute hand while the running second hand is made out of blued steel. The appearance of this Datejust on the wrist is awesome.
It’s fitted on a steel 1964′ riveted 20mm oyster bracelet.
