Mathey Tissot Valjoux 72 Chronograph
very rare and maybe unique chronograph watch from the 1950’s. The brand Mathey Tissot was an independent watch company back in the days. It should not be confused with the brand ‘Tissot’, although the name is very similar the companies are not aligned to each other. Mathey Tissot made some very exclusive watches back in the days. They where also closely involved by the production and development of the Breguet Type 20 flyback chronograph. There are Breguet type xx watches known bearing ‘Mathey Tissot’ on the dial, today the brand has been taken over by a Chinese investor who only produces “low budget” watches.
The watch case is made of gold and has a polygonal screw back case. The unrestored dial and blued hands are beautiful and very similar with dials from high end brands as Patek Philippe and Jaeger Le Coultre from the same era. Actually the exact same watch has been sold in the past bearing ‘Jaeger Lecoultre’ on the dial. It’s still unknown if the watch has been designed by Mathey-Tissot for Le Coultre or visa versa.
A Valjoux 72 movement is running inside. This high end chronograph movement is well known from other brands as Heuer and Rolex. As Rolex did not produced an in-house hronograph movement until 1999, they used the same Valjoux 72 movement for their well known ‘Paul Newman’ chronograph. The movement is know for it’s perfect chronograph and precise timing.
This Mathey Tissot valjoux 72 chronograph is fitted on a later gold bracelet. The style of the bracelet fits the watch very well but it could also be worn on a leather bracelet. I personally prefer to wear this watch on a leather bracelet but as the gold mesh bracelet fits the watch so well we offer this Mathey Tissot with both a leather and a gold bracelet.
