Description

A ladies’ Piaget cocktail watch in 18k yellow gold, dating from approximately 1990, and presented in excellent condition with its original Piaget box. The watch is fully set with factory diamonds and baguette-cut diamonds; a combination that places it firmly in Piaget’s celebrated high-jewellery tradition, where the line between wristwatch and fine jewellery was deliberately and gloriously erased. This is not a watch that happens to have diamonds; it is a jewellery object that also tells the time, conceived and executed from the outset as a single unified piece of wearable art.

Piaget and the Jewellery Watch – A House at Its Peak

By the late 1980s and into the 1990s, Piaget had established itself as the undisputed master of the high-jewellery bracelet watch; a category it had essentially invented during the 1960s and refined over three decades of increasingly bold experimentation. While the wider Swiss industry was navigating the aftermath of the quartz crisis, Piaget responded by doubling down on what no one else could do: integrating the finest gemstone setting with ultra-thin movements in watches that were as impressive to a jeweller as they were to a watchmaker.

The company’s motto, coined by founder Georges-Edouard Piaget in 1874, was simply: “Always do better than necessary.” In the jewellery watch category, this principle manifested in cases, dials, and bracelets that were set stone by stone by hand, with round brilliants for the pave surfaces and precisely cut baguettes for the architectural framing elements. Baguette diamonds, with their clean rectangular geometry, demand exceptional precision in cutting and setting; each stone must be individually fitted to its mount, and even a fraction of a millimetre of misalignment is visible to the eye. That Piaget set them at scale, across the full surface of a wristwatch and bracelet, is a testament to the quality of its Geneva and La Côte-aux-Fées ateliers.

The Craft Behind the Setting

The combination of brilliant-cut and baguette-cut diamonds in a single piece reflects a deliberate design philosophy. Round brilliants – set pavé across the dial and case surfaces – create a dense, continuous field of light that shifts and sparkles with every movement of the wrist. The baguette stones, typically deployed along the bezel and at structural transitions between case and bracelet, add architectural clarity: sharp, linear, and precise, they frame the composition and give it structure. Together, the two cuts create a visual rhythm, brilliance, and geometry, softness and line, that is characteristic of Piaget jewellery watches from this era at their most refined.

The Dial

The dial is fully set with factory round brilliant diamonds, creating an unbroken field of light in place of a conventional dial surface. There are no applied indices — the diamonds themselves serve as the face of the watch, caught and redirected by each stone in turn. The effect in natural light is extraordinary: the dial appears almost to dissolve, leaving only movement and brilliance. Gold sword-shaped hands in yellow gold provide the only contrast, reading clearly against the diamond ground.

Collector Appeal

Piaget’s high-jewellery bracelet watches of the late 1980s and early 1990s represent the apex of the maison’s work in this category, produced at a moment when its gem-setting ateliers were operating at full maturity, its ultra-thin movements were world-renowned, and the demand for integrated jewellery watches among a global clientele of collectors and connoisseurs was at its height. Fully factory-set examples in 18k yellow gold with both brilliant and baguette diamonds, in excellent condition with original box, are genuinely difficult to find in this state.
