A Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust reference 1601 in full 18k yellow gold, fitted with a factory black sunburst dial set with diamond hour markers and presented in excellent condition. The case is sharp throughout with minimal signs of wear, the fluted bezel retains its definition, and the black dial is original and unrestored, the deep, even sunburst finish providing a visual backdrop against which the factory diamonds and gold hands create a genuinely striking composition. This is not the standard steel and gold Datejust of common acquaintance. It is the all-gold version, with the rarest dial configuration Rolex offered on the reference: a combination that surfaces with far less frequency than any other 1601 variant and commands a corresponding premium among collectors who know it.
The Datejust 1601 – Two Decades of the Definitive Dress Rolex
The Rolex Datejust reference 1601 was produced from 1960 to 1981, making it one of the longest-running references in the Datejust family and the model that defined the Datejust’s identity for an entire generation. At 36mm, it wore larger than earlier Datejust references while remaining well within the proportions of a dress watch; fitted with the fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet, it established the visual vocabulary that the Datejust family continues to use today. Every current Rolex Datejust is, in design terms, a descendant of the 1601.
Through its twenty-one years of production, the 1601 was offered in an extraordinary range of configurations: steel, two-tone, full yellow gold and occasionally white gold or pink gold; dials in silver, champagne, black, blue, grey, lapis lazuli and others; indices in applied batons, diamonds, or occasionally other precious stones. Most examples that come to market are steel or two-tone with standard baton dials. The full yellow gold version with factory diamond markers is a small minority of total production, exactly the kind of rare variant that serious vintage Rolex collectors seek out specifically.
Full Gold – A Different Watch Entirely
The ref. 1601 in full 18k yellow gold is not simply a more expensive version of the steel model. It is a categorically different object. The warmth of the gold case against the fluted bezel, the weight on the wrist, the way the metal develops its own patina and character over decades, these are qualities that steel and two-tone cannot replicate. The fluted bezel on a full gold 1601 is itself machined from solid gold, and the alternating brushed and polished surfaces of the Oyster case catch the light with a richness that only precious metal can produce.
The ref. 1601 in yellow gold was produced across the full span of the reference’s production run, powered by a succession of movements, Calibre 1560, 1565, 1570 and 1575, each an improvement on the last, and each sharing the same fundamental architecture of a Rolex-made automatic chronometer calibre adjusted to five positions and temperature. The result across all variants is a movement of exceptional reliability and accuracy, maintained and serviced by Rolex’s worldwide network for over sixty years.
The Dial – Factory Diamonds on Black
The black sunburst dial is the most visually dramatic configuration available on the ref. 1601, a deep, even black ground that shifts from near-charcoal to rich graphite depending on the angle of the light, providing maximum contrast for the applied gold hands and maximum visual impact for the diamond hour markers. The factory diamonds are brilliant-cut, set in individual yellow gold mounts at each hour position, and scintillate against the black ground with every movement of the wrist. This is a factory Rolex dial, not an aftermarket diamond conversion, which are common on this reference and which lack both the quality of setting and the collector value of a genuine Rolex factory configuration. The Rolex crown logo at twelve is applied in gold, and the “Rolex / Oyster Perpetual / Datejust” signature reads in clean, crisp lettering above the “Superlative Chronometer / Officially Certified” text below.
