A 1960s Patek Philippe Calatrava in 18-karat yellow gold, fitted with an integrated gold Milanese bracelet, a rare and sought-after original configuration. The silvered dial with applied baton indices and subsidiary seconds is powered by the manually wound calibre 23-300 with Geneva Seal and Gyromax balance. An exceptional combination of Genevan refinement and period craftsmanship.
A rare and refined example of mid-century Genevan watchmaking at its most elegant. This vintage Patek Philippe Calatrava in 18-karat yellow gold is presented on an integrated gold-tone Milanese bracelet, an original configuration that was offered during the 1960s and is today far scarcer than the standard leather-strap version. The combination of Calatrava’s slim round case with the supple woven bracelet results in a watch of exceptional presence and wearability, and one that stands apart from the more commonly encountered examples.
The Calatrava and Its Place in Watchmaking History
Launched in 1932 and named after the Calatrava Cross, the symbol of the Knights of Calatrava and Patek Philippe’s own emblem, the Calatrava reference family represents the purest expression of the Geneva manufacture’s philosophy. Inspired by the Bauhaus principle that form follows function, the Calatrava dispensed with ornament in favour of clean geometry, perfect proportions, and superlative movement finishing. It has remained in continuous production for over ninety years, a feat matched by virtually no other Swiss watch.
The 1960s Calatrava, powered by the calibre 23-300, represents a mature and refined iteration of this design ideal. The calibre itself, a 10-ligne manual-winding movement measuring 23 mm in diameter and just 3 mm in height, was produced between 1956 and 1975 and appeared across the most celebrated Calatrava and Ellipse references of the era. It carries the Geneva Seal, is adjusted to five positions, and is equipped with an overcoil hairspring and Patek Philippe’s patented Gyromax free-sprung balance, a combination that places it among the finest manually wound movements of its generation.
The Integrated Gold Milanese Bracelet
The Milanese bracelet fitted to this Calatrava is what makes it exceptional. During the 1960s, Patek Philippe offered a select number of references paired with gold Milanese bracelets, typically manufactured by Gay Frères, the legendary Geneva bracelet maker that supplied virtually every major Swiss watchmaker of the period. These woven gold bracelets are characterised by their extraordinary softness on the wrist, the density of their interlocking links, and the remarkable craftsmanship required to produce them. Period-correct Milanese bracelets in 18-karat yellow gold are today increasingly rare and eagerly sought by collectors, as few have survived in original, unaltered condition.
The clasp bears hallmarks consistent with 18-karat gold and period Swiss manufacture. The caseback is engraved “Dominick Corsaro,” indicating this watch was a personal gift, a reminder that the finest Patek Philippe pieces were, and remain, intimately personal objects.
The Dial
The silvered dial presents the restrained, almost austere beauty that defines the Calatrava at its most correct. Applied gold baton hour markers create a precise rhythm around the chapter ring, while matching gold dauphine hands provide clarity and elegance in equal measure. The subsidiary seconds register at 6 o’clock, characteristic of the calibre 23-300’s layout, adds a classical, technically satisfying detail without disrupting the dial’s essential calm. In natural light, the surface takes on a cool, luminous quality that shifts subtly with the angle of view.
