Description

Among the most visually striking and collector-coveted variations of any vintage Rolex, this GMT-Master reference 1675 carries the famous fuchsia bezel insert, a naturally aged aluminium dial that began life as the standard red-and-blue Pepsi before time and chemistry transformed its red half into a vibrant pinkish-magenta that collectors call “fuchsia” or “Pink Lady.” The effect, visible only on a specific production window of approximately one to two years, is immediate and unmistakable: the upper half of the bezel retains its vivid blue while the lower half has faded into a rich, jewel-like purple-magenta that bears no resemblance to either the red it once was or any other bezel in vintage Rolex collecting. Paired with the Mark I matte black dial, tritium luminous markers, and the correct folded-link Oyster bracelet, this is a GMT-Master of exceptional appeal.

Born in the Cockpit – The GMT-Master and Pan Am

The Rolex GMT-Master was created in direct partnership with Pan American World Airways in the mid-1950s. As Pan Am began flying long-haul transatlantic and transpacific routes, its pilots needed a way to read two time zones simultaneously in the cockpit. Rolex’s answer, the GMT-Master reference 6542 in 1954, with a fourth hand tracking a second time zone against a 24-hour rotating bezel, was an immediate success. By 1959, the reference had been refined into the 1675: the case grew to 40mm, crown guards were added to protect the winding crown, and the fragile bakelite bezel was replaced with a durable aluminium insert. For two decades, the reference 1675 served professional pilots, military officers, engineers, and travellers worldwide before being succeeded by the reference 16750 in 1980.

The Fuchsia Bezel – A Window of One to Two Years

No feature of the vintage GMT-Master generates more excitement among specialist collectors than the fuchsia bezel insert. It is not a factory option, a special order, or a deliberate design choice. It is an accident of chemistry, and one that occurred only within a very narrow production window. Collectors and researchers have identified fuchsia bezels exclusively on watches falling within the 1.8 million to 1.9 million serial range, corresponding to production circa 1968–1969. Within that range, something in the composition of the aluminium anodising used for the red half of the bezel insert reacted differently to light, UV exposure, and the passage of time than the dye used before or after. The red faded not to a washed-out pink but into a fully saturated, vivid fuchsia, a colour found nowhere else in the entire Rolex catalogue.

Each fuchsia bezel is unique in precisely how it has faded: some lean toward deep magenta, others toward violet, others toward a pure hot pink. All carry the vivid blue of the original upper half intact, creating a bicolour effect that is simultaneously more unexpected and more arresting than the familiar red-and-blue Pepsi that inspired it. Because the fuchsia phenomenon is tied to a specific production serial range, and because the original bezel inserts have been swapped, replaced, or faked on countless examples over the decades, authenticating a genuine fuchsia 1675 requires matching the serial number to the correct 1.8M–1.9M range, the only guarantee that the insert is original to the watch.

The Mark I “Long E” Dial

The matte black dial of this 1675 is the Mark I, the earliest of the matte dial variations, produced from approximately 1966 to 1972 and distinguished by its two defining typographic details. The first is the extended central crossbar of the “E” in “ROLEX,” matching the length of the upper and lower arms, the feature that gives this dial variant its collector nickname, “Long E.” The second is the coronet above the Rolex name, rendered in a fine, delicate “string-like” style specific to this production period. These details are immediately recognisable to the collector who knows what they are looking at, and they confirm that this dial is correct and period-matched to the fuchsia bezel it accompanies. The “Swiss T<25” designation at 6 o’clock confirms the tritium luminous material used on the hour markers and hands, which have developed the warm, creamy patina characteristic of aged tritium in excellent condition.

The Dial

The matte black surface is clean and even. Round luminous markers at each hour position have aged to a warm cream tone that photographs richly and reads beautifully in person. The Mercedes-style hour hand and the red GMT arrow hand sweep the dial with the purposeful precision of a watch designed to be read at a glance at altitude. The Cyclops-magnified date aperture at 3 o’clock completes the layout. The acrylic crystal above contributes to the warm, slightly domed optical quality of this generation of GMT-Master, a quality retired when sapphire replaced it on the subsequent 16750.
