Description

A Cartier Pasha chronograph reference 0960 in 18-karat yellow gold, fitted with a striking professional diamond setting on the bezel, pushers, and crown. Dating to the 1990s, this is a watch that balances the bold sporting architecture of the Pasha de Cartier with high-jewellery execution; the result of a commission by a well-known German jeweller, who set the bezel and all operating elements with approximately 2.5 carats of D-colour round brilliant diamonds. Accompanied by its original box and papers and presented on its original 18k Cartier gold bracelet with signed deployant clasp, this is an exceptionally complete example of one of Cartier’s most iconic and enduring references.

The Pasha de Cartier – A Watch Born in Water

The Pasha has a history stretching back over 80 years. In 1943, Cartier presented a gold watch with a round case, screw-down caseback, and centrally-positioned lugs. The watch was reportedly commissioned by the Pasha of Marrakech, a man with an appetite for luxury and a need for a timepiece that could accompany him in the water, a practical brief that produced one of the most characterful case designs in watchmaking history.

The modern Pasha collection, introduced in 1985 and developed through the late 1980s and 1990s, retained design codes of the original, including the round case and the chained crown cap, while incorporating the complications and quartz movements of the era. The reference 0960 brought the chronograph complication to the Pasha for the first time: a three-register quartz layout with a 30-minute counter at 10, a 12-hour counter at 2, a small seconds, and a date aperture at 6.

A Diamond Commission

The bezel, crown, and pushers of this example have been set with round brilliant diamonds by a well-known German jeweller, in a setting executed to a professional standard that rewards close inspection. The diamonds, totalling approximately 2.5 carats, graded D-colour, are set in double rows across the bezel and individually in the three operating elements: the two chronograph pushers and the chained crown cap. The effect is significant without being excessive: the watch retains the readable simplicity of the original Pasha dial, while the diamond setting gives the case an unmistakable presence that a plain gold example cannot match.

The Dial

The dial is in classic Pasha white with the number 12 and applied gold baton markers at the remaining hours. Three sub-dials provide the chronograph registers, with blued steel hands throughout for legibility and contrast against the white surface. A date aperture sits at 6. In hand, the dial reads with the quiet confidence of a watch that was designed to be used, not merely admired.
