Description

This Rolex Day-Date reference 18038 in 18k yellow gold is fitted with one of the more unusual and appealing dial configurations the early 18038 production offered: a champagne sunburst dial set with factory diamond hour markers, one of the most elegant and enduring configurations the 18038 was produced in.

The Day-Date 18038 – The First Five-Digit President

Introduced in 1977, the reference 18038 was the first five-digit Day-Date reference and brought three meaningful advances over the outgoing reference 1803: the Calibre 3055 movement with a single quickset date function, a higher-frequency balance for improved accuracy, and, for the first time on any Day-Date, a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal in place of the acrylic that had been used since the model’s introduction in 1956. These were not cosmetic updates; they represented a genuine leap in the daily utility of what was already Rolex’s most prestigious and technically accomplished watch.

The Day-Date was, and remains, the President’s watch. Since its launch, it has been associated with heads of state, world leaders, and figures at the apex of public life in ways no other watch has managed to replicate. Part of its authority comes from the day display at 12 o’clock, a complication that in the 1950s was technically demanding enough to be genuinely impressive, and which Rolex has never offered in steel. The Day-Date has always been gold, and the gold Day-Date has always meant something.

The serial number places this example in approximately 1984–1985 production; a mid-run 18038, manufactured at a point when the reference had fully established itself as the definitive modern Day-Date.

Single Quickset and the Sapphire Crystal

The Calibre 3055 inside this watch introduced what Rolex called the “single quickset” function: the date could be advanced independently by pulling the crown to the first position, without moving the hands. This was a practical improvement welcomed by owners who had previously needed to cycle the hands through twelve hours to advance the date. The “single” in single quickset refers to the fact that this generation set only the date quickly; the day display still required hand-cycling, a limitation that the subsequent 18238 would address.

The sapphire crystal, meanwhile, was a defining change that transformed the wearer’s experience. Unlike the acrylic crystals of the reference 1803 era, which scratched easily and required periodic buffing, the sapphire held its clarity indefinitely under normal wear. In this example, the crystal remains clean and scratch-free after more than four decades.

The Dial

The dial is finished in a classic champagne sunburst; a warm, radiating finish that Rolex has long paired with gold cases to maximise the sense of depth and luminosity in the dial. Factory-set diamond hour markers sit at each hour position, with a baguette diamond at 6. In natural light, the diamonds catch and hold with understated brilliance against the warm champagne surface. The day display reads in Spanish, and the magnified date window at 3 o’clock completes the classic Day-Date configuration. The dial is in excellent condition, clean and undisturbed.
