A rare Rolex Oyster Perpetual reference 6090 in 18k pink gold, featuring the sculptural “Bombé” lug form unique to a brief window of 1950s production, and elegantly twisted lugs that have never been reproduced. The black lacquer dial with applied rose gold baton indices and the clean, no-date layout give this watch a jewellery-like refinement. An exceptional piece of mid-century Rolex craftsmanship.

Description

A rare and beautiful survivor from Rolex’s most artistically ambitious period. This Oyster Perpetual reference 6090 in 18-karat pink gold is distinguished by its “Bombé” lugs, an elegantly twisted, sculptural lug form that appears on only a handful of 1950s Rolex references and has never been revived. Paired with a black lacquer dial and applied pink gold baton indices, the watch has a jewellery-like presence that belongs to a different register from the functional sports watches that would define Rolex’s identity in the decades that followed. Presented on a black crocodile-style leather strap with a rose gold buckle, this is Rolex at its most refined and most personal.

The 1950s Oyster Perpetual – Rolex Before the Formula

The 1950s were a transitional decade for Rolex. The brand had already established the core of its technical vocabulary, the waterproof Oyster case, the Perpetual self-winding movement, and the chronometer certification, but had not yet locked itself into the sports watch identity that the Submariner, GMT-Master, and Explorer would cement through the decade. The result, for a brief and irreplaceable window, was a range of time-only Oyster Perpetual watches of extraordinary aesthetic variety. Enamel dials, honeycomb dials, lacquer dials in black and cream; lugs that twisted and flared and curved in ways no production Rolex has attempted since. These watches were made for a clientele that expected jewellery-level refinement from a precision timepiece.

The reference 6090 represents this spirit in its most concentrated form. The “Bombé” designation refers to the case’s lug geometry, long, sweeping lugs that curve outward and then back with a sculptural, almost architectural quality. The watch sits low and elegantly on the wrist; it drapes rather than grips. At 33–34mm, it is a size that reads as precise and refined rather than commanding, and the absence of a date window or any subsidiary complication keeps the dial entirely free of interruption.

Pink Gold and Black Lacquer – The Defining Combination

Rose gold, referred to in period nomenclature as “pink gold” or “or rose”, was a standard precious metal option at Rolex during the 1950s, before the brand gradually consolidated around yellow gold for its prestige watches. On the ref. 6090, the warmth of the rose gold reads against the deep black lacquer dial with a contrast that no other configuration of this reference achieves: the applied baton indices catch the light against the near-black dial surface, and the rose gold hands sweep across it with a warmth that cool yellow gold cannot replicate. The pink gold buckle on the black crocodile strap continues the palette with precision.

The Dial

The black lacquer dial is deep, even, and glossy, a quality particular to the fired lacquer surfaces of 1950s Rolex production that subsequent decades of matte and printed dials cannot reproduce. Applied rose gold baton hour markers sit at each position with the calm authority of a dress watch designed without compromise. Arrowhead or dart-shaped markers at the quarter hours add a gentle variation in geometry that breaks the monotony without introducing complexity. The rose gold dauphine or lance hands deliver the warmth of the case metal directly onto the dial surface. Without a date aperture, the dial is entirely clean, a quality that becomes increasingly rare as the decade progresses.
