Vintage Dress Rolex Cellini Diamond Pavé Dial, circa 1970s
Price on Request
A rare and undocumented Rolex Cellini reference 4137 in two-tone white and yellow gold, with a full pavé dial set with 244 round brilliant diamonds. Manual wind, 26 × 34 mm rectangular case.
This Rolex Cellini reference 4137 is a quietly exceptional example of a rectangular, manual-wind dress watch in two-tone white and yellow gold, its dial entirely set with 244 diamonds in a seamless pavé arrangement. Measuring 26 by 34 millimetres, it carries the composed proportions of a classical dress watch while delivering a level of decorative ambition that places it well outside the typical Cellini canon. The combination of fluted white gold flanks, yellow gold horizontal bars, and a full pavé dial gives the watch a sculptural quality that feels considered rather than embellished; every element in its right place.
A Rolex Made for a Different Audience
The Cellini line was introduced as Rolex’s answer to the great Swiss dress watch houses; a deliberate move into the territory of Patek Philippe, Piaget, and Audemars Piguet, where artistic form and precious materials came first. Named after Benvenuto Cellini, the 16th-century Florentine goldsmith whose jewelled creations defined Renaissance luxury, the collection gave Rolex license to experiment: with shape, silhouette, stone-setting, and material in ways its Oyster catalogue never permitted.
Within the Cellini family, a further tier existed with pieces offered discreetly through Rolex’s Crown Collection, reserved for private clients, dignitaries, and royal households. These watches were produced in tiny numbers, often with a level of individual attention that made each example distinct. Reference 4137 bears the hallmarks of this approach: the two-tone case construction, the fully pavé-set dial, and the near-total absence of any public record of a second example suggest a piece that was never intended for the open market. Despite a thorough search, no comparable example has surfaced in public archives or on any trading platform.
Architecture in Miniature
The case is the first thing a trained eye will notice. Where most rectangular Cellini pieces of this era present in a single metal, the 4137 contrasts vertically brushed white gold flanks that are deeply grooved, recalling the fluting of a classical column, with yellow gold horizontal bars that frame the dial at top and bottom. The crown is also in yellow gold, adding a further accent against the white case. The sides bow very slightly, a detail that on paper sounds minor but in hand gives the watch an organic softness that prevents it from reading as merely architectural. The case back is plain brushed steel, bearing small hallmark punches.
The Dial
The dial is set entirely with 244 round brilliant diamonds in a continuous pavé, leaving no base visible, and the effect is of looking into light rather than at a surface. Yellow gold hands; an hour and minute only, no seconds, provide clear punctuation against the brilliance, and applied plaques in yellow gold carry the Rolex signature above and the Genève designation below. There are no hour markers and no numerals. The stones do the work of marking time, and do it beautifully.
