A Rolex Oyster Perpetual reference 6284 in 9-carat yellow gold, UK hallmarked and almost certainly London-retailed, circa 1950s. The black lacquered gilt waffle dial is original and unrestored, the radium indices and hands aged to a warm brown patina over seventy years. An exceptionally rare combination of case metal, dial variant, and preserved condition
A Rolex Oyster Perpetual reference 6284 in 9-carat gold, hallmarked for the United Kingdom; one of the rarest and most quietly compelling combinations this reference can offer. The case is a small production variant in 9ct gold, delivered to the British market in the 1950s and stamped with UK hallmarks, almost certainly retailed through a London jeweller. The dial is a black lacquered gilt waffle; original, unrestored, and in extraordinary condition after more than seventy years.
The Reference 6284 and the Art of the Waffle Dial
The Oyster Perpetual reference 6284 was produced by Rolex through the early-to-mid 1950s as the brand’s definitive mid-size time-only Oyster. At 34mm across, it sat comfortably between the smaller ladies’ references and the emerging professional tool watches, making it Rolex’s most versatile and widely worn case of the era. The vast majority were produced in stainless steel; a small number were cased in gold, most commonly 18-karat. The 9-carat gold variants, produced specifically for the British market, where 9ct has always been the standard for fine jewellery and dress watches, represent an even smaller and less documented subset.
The waffle dial, named for its distinctive textured grid pattern pressed into the lacquered surface, was one of several dial treatments Rolex offered on the 6284 during this period. It appears in both gilt and cream variations, and in this configuration, black-lacquered with gilt-applied indices, it produces a dial of dramatic depth and visual contrast. Original waffle dials are among the most coveted surfaces in all of vintage Rolex collecting; they age distinctively, the lacquer developing a rich depth of tone, and they survive unrestored in this condition only when a watch has been carefully kept.
What makes this example extraordinary is the completeness of its originality. The dial surface shows no signs of restoration, the lacquer remains intact, and the radium-painted indices and hands have aged to a warm, deep brown, precisely the kind of honest patina that cannot be replicated and that experienced collectors recognise immediately as the hallmark of an untouched original.
Nine Carats and a London Hallmark
The decision to produce a small number of Oyster Perpetual references in 9-carat gold for the British market reflects a commercial reality of the 1950s: 9ct was the dominant precious metal for quality wristwatches sold in the UK, where buyers expected gold at a price accessible for everyday wear. Rolex supplied cases to the UK through its established British distribution network, with cases passing through the London Assay Office and receiving their hallmarks before retail. These watches were bought by London’s professional classes: doctors, solicitors, city men, and were worn daily without ceremony.
The 9ct Oyster case is mechanically identical to its 18ct counterpart: screw-down caseback and crown, the full Oyster water-resistance system, and a signed movement within. The only difference is the gold standard, which today makes this example considerably rarer than an equivalent 18ct piece, because far fewer were produced and far fewer have been identified by the market.
The Dial
The dial is lacquered in deep black with a fine waffle texture pressed across the entire surface, creating a three-dimensional quality that shifts subtly in different light. Applied gilt indices and the applied Rolex crown signature sit proudly on the surface with a quiet authority. The hands are gilt, tapered, and have aged to a warm brown, the radium luminous material having patinated evenly over seven decades. At more than seventy years old, this dial looks as though it has never been touched.
